Introduction
Hello and Welcome to Edy Hurst’s production Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Himself. I’m [xxx] and I’ll be leading this session for you today and the first half will be me reading out
some information on the characters appearance, set, and visuals that take place
throughout the show for you to get a sense of the production. The second half will be
a touch tour where you can have a chance to come up on stage and experience the
set and props at a closer range.

General description of this production

Commissioned as part of Lowry's 'Developed With' Programme and supported by Arts Council England, Combining comedy, clowning, live music and a giant cauldron, Edy Hurst’s Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Himself is a new magical and mystical comedy
theatre show that offers a humorous, heartfelt and unique insight into the shifting and sometimes mysterious world of late-stage ADHD diagnosis.

The Set

On stage with Edy is a large, black cauldron which sits centre stage. A white screen is pulled down during the show behind the cauldron with captions and videos displayed on it. There are many props, from a large spell book with collaged pages and a magic hat and a salt ring- yes that’s right, a ring of salt sachets… its to keep us safe with the spells!

As well as the cabinet of curiosity (which moves so please be careful when we enter the stage!) A brown vintage cabinet which is used to display tarrort cards on its back. The cabinet is filled with skulls, candles and well… a lot of things we don’t use like a frog skull. But all add to our spooky witchy world but please, don’t pick any of them up our set designer would not be happy.

And of course, Edy. A white man with a moustache and black thick glasses. Usually found wearing a shirt and chinos but for one (or maybe two) nights here at Lowry, Edy.. on his quest will be wearing a black robe and a brown wicker hat with a beak on it. We asked him if this mystical character had a name but you can call him.. Edy.. in a black robe… with a wicker hat.

Visuals

Captions appear throughout the performance; their font is large and clear although at times alters to a coloured font to emulate shifting between voices, characters and stories. The show is accompanied with coloured lights that appear throughout to help set the world. Colour changing candles (battery operated) are put around the stage and handed to audience members at one point and change colour (through a magic spell of course) And big white beackballs which may be thrown into the audience.

Notes

Edy enters through the cauldron, attempting to climb out (and failing) he exts the large cauldron through the underneath (somewhat killing the magic of it all) And stands, proud. This show is a one person show, Edy introduces the world, the set and why we are here. The show is a comedy (so please laugh along with Edy) And there may be moments of laughter at something physically done on stage for example, trying to write on a large white scroll paper, sending a salt tape across the audience, improvising with audience members and sometimes (not not always!) messing up- these moments may be harder to predict and there are moments of improvisation and audience participation but fear not! Our magical, venga boys enthusiast will be on hand throughout the show describing his actions.

The show is just under an hour long and includes live loop pedal music, venga boys songs, magic spells, tarot reading and a dive into the past. We hope you enjoy!
